West Cambridge Renovation
West Cambridge, MA
A 1900’s four-square house that had not been renovated since the 1960’s presented an interesting challenge to a young couple who had aspirations of starting a family. Purchased in 2011, the couple asked LDa to reimagine the first and second floor spaces that were a result of two separate additions, leaving the house with an arrangement of disproportionate rooms. The goal was to renovate major portions of the house without expanding the existing footprint.
The first floor renovated spaces included a new kitchen, living room, dining room, and mudroom/entry, creating bright, open spaces with improved circulation. On the second floor, the couple wanted to create a new master suite by carving out space from an existing bedroom, stairwell, and office. On the exterior, new siding was needed to stitch the additions architecturally back to the original four-square design. A small second story addition helped to enhance the architectural character of the house, which was important to the homeowners because the house sits on a prominent corner lot in Cambridge’s historic Half Crown-Marsh Neighborhood.
