Sometimes it takes a while for inspiration to strike, and in this case, our client had lived in her South End brownstone for over a decade before deciding to make some changes. Spread over two floors, with bedrooms on the first floor, and the kitchen, dining and living room below on the garden level, the condo was comfortable and cozy - and ready for an update.
While keeping the layout of the garden level essentially the same, LDa added significantly more storage and light and unified the open-plan areas (Kitchen, Dining, Living) with a more contemporary aesthetic focusing on beautiful, natural materials. In the kitchen, a tiny pantry was removed and the entire area was gutted, exposing a previously-infilled open corner. Appliances were moved to smarter locations, and all new custom cabinetry takes full advantage of reclaimed space to add a new wall of storage and countertop. The white upper cabinets help to bring in and reflect light drawn from the French doors overlooking the garden, while fir-veneer base cabinets, honed statuary marble backsplash tile and leathered granite countertops offer tactile interest and a warm modern look.
New built-in cabinetry in the adjacent dining room hides an unsightly foundation ledge and adds more storage. The matching living room media cabinets, in addition to newly-lighted wood floors and a fresh coat of paint throughout, visually tie the entire floor together.
