Observatory Hill
Cambridge, MA
Motivated by a small house fire, the owners of this classic Cambridge colonial decided it would be the perfect time to upgrade their kitchen area. The owners, who have a love of cooking and entertaining, wanted to expand upon their existing 80 square foot kitchen and visualized a space that would bring family and friends together in a playful, yet sophisticated manner. The new modern kitchen addition provides plenty of cooking, entertaining and prep areas with its expansive grey concrete island and cozy sitting area overlooking the lawn. The overall goal of this new layout was to have the new kitchen and living space take full advantage of the backyard and terrace, blurring the border between inside and out. The large, moveable glass window panels and painted wood siding help bridge together the old and the new, transitioning from the traditionally structured home to the sleek modernity of the new addition.
Contemporary, elegant, and highly functional, the kitchen took shape in an open and accessible form that expands into other parts of the home, connecting to both the existing dining room and indoor pool area. A complete renovation was made to the powder and shower room near the pool entrance, which were also damaged in the fire, with a redesigned layout, new materials that complement the new kitchen, and a spacious shower for rinsing off after a swim. The new mudroom was fitted into the old kitchen location and the dining room was refreshed with a crisp coat of paint. In addition, the front powder room now has new fixtures, tile and newly painted aubergine-colored walls. The finished product is a polished modern addition that links together the existing home and pool-house, reflecting the family-oriented nature of the property.
