Modern Mosaic
Newton, MA
Brimming with history and charm but lacking a spacious floor plan, this 1930s colonial was falling short for its family of five. The clients enlisted LDa to create a new kitchen and connect their basement, two central gathering spots of the house. Eventually the project expanded to include a new mudroom, a renovated former dining room, an updated kids bathroom, and to finish off the project, a new backyard deck.
Lacking warmth—in ambience and temperature, LDa helped expand the existing kitchen into a space for cooking, prepping, and entertaining. The expanded kitchen features a perimeter of simple white cabinets, while the island has a warm, textured custom stained white oak construction. Sleek Caesarstone concrete countertops are accented by a custom-made marble backsplash. A butler’s pantry off the main kitchen adds much needed storage space as well as a place for appliances to live that is out of sight.
Contemporary in feel but accessibly-refined in design, the kitchen’s atmosphere fuses clean lines and warm accents, like the copper pendants in combination with the gray-toned stone, to manifest an airy space that naturally draws family together. The floor-to-ceiling sliding door panels puts nature only a step away, making it so that family members never miss a moment together, even when outside. The deck features a fire pit and outdoor seating area, which is a complementary extension off the kitchen.
A much-needed mudroom was added at the rear corner of the house which connects to the driveway and to the newly renovated basement. The family now enjoys a new family room, office, exercise room and laundry room which makes the basement a more integrated part of the home.
