Christopher Columbus Park
Boston, MA
The Columbus Park Maintenance Building is a 2,000 sf structure constructed as part of an overall redevelopment of a park on downtown Boston’s waterfront. This structure was designed as a quiet addition to the park. The use of traditional carriage house doors, windows, porch, canopy entries and materials such as cedar shingles, provide a texture and human scale that complements the park’s aesthetic. Each elevation directly relates to planned surrounding park uses and activities including a children’s playground and a pedestrian walkway.
Careful planning inside the building allows it to contain a large number of functions including public bathrooms, a mechanical and utility room which serves the entire park, spaces for two trucks and other landscape equipment, and office space for the park supervisor.
