Camp Squam Lake

Camp Squam Lake

Squam Lake, NH

Inspired by memories of summer camp and rooted in the formal and material traditions of vernacular New England architecture, this lakeside retreat for a Boston family of five includes bunkhouse accommodations for guests of all ages.

The living spaces are contained in three gabled pavilions that cascade down the slope of the land toward the lake, reinforcing the natural topography of the site. The arrival elevation of the home nestles into the forested hillside, while sunset and water views are brought deep into the house with a nearly continuous wall of windows on the lake side. The screened porch, main living, and family room – or winter porch – pavilions are joined together by a vertical slot of space reaching from the basement to the roof. The stair tower’s unique color, single-pitch roof and open steel stair provide elements of surprise and discovery while imparting a modern playfulness to the composition.
