The existing Burnell Hall Gymnasium has long served the University’s Dance and Movement programs, and was in need of refurbishment in order to elevate it to the current level of contemporary dance studio standards. The project was a gut renovation of the existing space and adjacent ancillary spaces, and included the installation of a new sprung dance floor that necessitated a number of careful accessibility strategies. Built-in millwork benches and cubbies provide storage and seating for class participants, and the existing large-scale room divider was removed, raised and refurbished.
The spaces will be used for a number of performance and rehearsal settings, including hip-hop, jazz, ensemble, creative dance studios as well as informal black box productions.
