As part of a larger bed-optimization effort on campus, LDa was asked to perform interior renovations at Stratton Hall, built in 1927. The scope of work included bed optimization on floors 1-3; reconfiguration of the basement for student rooms; a new lower-level entrance; renovation of restrooms throughout the building; and renovation of hallways and lounges.
Repairing moisture issues and restoring the lower level to a comfortable, usable living space was a priority for the renovation. This involved removing the entire basement slab and installing sub-slab drainage and insulation.
With the moisture issues addressed, existing bedroom window openings were enlarged to provide more light and ventilation, and a new ADA accessible entrance was created. This work added 22 additional beds in the basement.
New furniture and room configuration changes on the upper 3 floors added another 55 beds, for an increase of 77 beds across the project. While the upper-floor renovations did not require the total gut renovation that the basement did, every bathroom was updated, and new ADA-accessible bathrooms were created, a new kitchen was built off the main lounge, and the interior finishes and fixtures throughout the building were replaced.
The updates honor the building’s historic character while providing a sophisticated setting for modern student life.
