Stratton Hall lounge

Tufts University | Stratton Hall

Somerville, MA

As part of a larger bed optimization effort on campus, LDa was asked to perform interior renovations for Stratton Hall, built in 1927. The scope of work included performing bed optimization on floors 1-3, reconfiguration of the basement for student rooms, adding a new lower level entrance, renovation of the restrooms throughout the building and renovation of the hallways and lounges.

Restoring living space

Repairing the moisture issues and returning the lower level to a comfortable and usable living floor was a priority for the renovation. This entailed removing the basement slab in its entirety and installing sub-slab drainage and insulation.

Light, air, and access

With the moisture issues addressed, existing bedroom window openings were enlarged to provide more light and ventilation, and a new ADA accessible entrance was created. This work provided an additional 22 beds in the basement.

Expanded capacity + modernized living

New furniture and room configuration changes on the upper 3 floors added another 55 beds, for an increase of 77 beds throughout the project. While the upper floor renovations did not require the total gut renovation that the basement did, every bathroom was updated and new ADA accessible bathrooms created, a new kitchen was built off the main lounge, and the interior finishes and fixtures throughout the building were replaced.

Classic yet modern

The updates honor the building’s historic character while providing a sophisticated setting for modern student life.
