Copper Park

Chestnut Hill, MA

This renovation and addition preserves the home’s historic character while updating it to meet the needs of a young family. Several additions over the home’s 120+ year history resulted in a disjointed space with poor flow. The new homeowners recognized its potential—especially given the spectacular property—but knew it would need considerable work to meet their goals.

A modern take on tradition

Using old-world materials, the texture and warmth of new stained beams frame the original fireplace while a new limestone mantle accentuates the importance of hearth and home. A recessed television is hidden in plain sight behind a framed piece of artwork, which can be concealed at the touch of a button.

Illuminating the details

Bathed in natural light, the kitchen showcases a balance of function and comfort, its carefully considered layout maximizing space yet maintaining an intimate, inviting scale.

Uncovering hidden potential

On the first floor, walls were removed to create a more open plan and better connect spaces to the exterior. The home’s main stair was redone in steel and brass, an elegant winding form that connects the three floors. The simple white-on-white palette gives the furniture a welcoming feel.

Seamless connections

A glass-enclosed breezeway with a mudroom and powder room connects the main house to a new carriage house, which features a garage and guest suite.

A cohesive evolution

On the exterior, the shingle pattern was preserved and repeated in added areas, the roof deck was enclosed to extend the master suite, and work was done to better balance the various additions into a more classical composition. The landscape work preserved the large street facing lawn, enlarged the driveway, expanded and improved the patio areas, and added a new collection of plantings.
