Appalachian Mountain Club, Chairback Lodge and Cabins

Greenville, ME

LDa was engaged to design a 3,000-square-foot Lodge to support an existing cluster of eight lodging cabins, along with four new ones. The Lodge includes dining space, a kitchen, and bathroom facilities with an adjacent sauna.

Traditional aesthetic, modern performance

The design embodies a contemporary and highly energy-efficient interpretation of traditional log construction, creating a visual and material dialogue with authentic log-built cabins. While wood stoves primarily heat the cabins, the lodge features in-slab radiant heating powered by locally sourced wood.

Resilient design

The entire facility is designed to operate off the grid. Energy is provided by a large photovoltaic (PV) array with battery storage, supported by a backup propane generator, ensuring year-round resilience.

A model for sustainable stewardship

Sustainability was a central focus of the project. The wood-fired sauna and bathrooms with waterless urinals and Clivus composting toilets reflect a commitment to low-impact design. Designed to meet LEED standards, the lodge aligns with the Appalachian Mountain Club’s mission to promote the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the region’s mountains, forests, waters, and trails.
