Brook House Barn Exterior Rear Dusk

Brook House Barn

Alford, MA

LDa developed a master plan for the new owners of over 100 acres of Berkshire farmland and woodlands, much of it protected by conservation restrictions. The approach balances long-term land stewardship with a phased vision for the property’s future.

A barn reimagined

The first step was creating a central home base for exploring the fields, woods, and brook. This space also supports the next phase of renovations to the main house.

A 1940s barn perched on a meadow knoll was thoughtfully transformed into a temporary residence and future guesthouse. The adaptive reuse honors the barn’s agricultural character while introducing modern comfort.

Travel as inspiration

Inspired by the family’s travels, the interiors draw from the calm simplicity of a Swedish cabin. Removing ceilings, contemporary fixtures, and vintage details creates a layered dialogue between old and new.

Comfort + craft

A palette of bright white, cool black, and warm natural wood establishes a serene interior atmosphere. New insulation, heating, electrical systems, plumbing, and windows ensure the barn remains bright, cozy, and energy efficient year-round.
