Heritage Revival Living Room Wide Shot

Heritage Revival

Newton, MA

For a young family in an 1896 Colonial, creating more room didn’t require reimagining the entire house. Instead, a series of targeted interventions transformed underused spaces into a new primary suite and playroom while preserving the character and familiarity of the home they already loved.

Untapped potential

At just under 400 square feet, the partially finished attic presented both an opportunity and a puzzle. Careful adjustments to circulation, proportions, and the existing roofline made room for a bedroom, bath, built-in storage, and office nook—creating a primary suite that feels both spacious and intimate within its compact footprint.

Collected character

Drawing from English cottage, Victorian, and American heritage influences, the interiors embrace color, pattern, and a sense of collected history. Checkerboard flooring, rich greens, warm mauve tones, wallpaper, brass fixtures, and finely detailed cabinetry give the new spaces a layered, highly personal character that feels at home within the 1896 residence.

A new playroom

Replacing an underused greenhouse with a playroom and media space created more room for everyday family life without dramatically expanding the home. The carefully considered addition provides a dedicated place to play, relax, and gather while supporting the family’s changing needs.

Maximum impact

Together, the transformations fundamentally changed how the family can live in the house. By concentrating on improvements where it mattered most, the renovation has created privacy for the parents, a dedicated play space, and room for the family to grow—all while meeting style preferences and preserving the character that made the historic home special in the first place.
