Carpenter Gothic Renovation

Carpenter Gothic Renovation

Newton, MA

In the renovation of this home on West Newton Hill, LDa faced several challenges. A tight site and the zoning issues that go along with it, there was the age and character of the house itself. Hidden under several layers of additions, stood one of the original homes in the neighborhood. A simple post-and-beam cottage that, over its roughly 200 year existence, had survived a nearly catastrophic fire and two major additions that had completely transformed the structure into the Victorian home that currently faces Prince Street.

LDa’s work focused mainly on the original part of the home and the garage wing which was added in the early 20th Century. Working almost exclusively within the existing footprint, the kitchen area was renovated and expanded, the garage converted to a play/family room, and a guest suite added. Above the new family room, the master bedroom was renovated with the added bonus of a new master bathroom. Lastly, a new rear stairway and accompanying tower were added, improving circulation throughout the house, as well as creating a dramatic “writer’s loft” for working and taking in the views of the surrounding hills.
