Split Oaks Farm

Split Oaks Farm

Petersburg, NY

The homeowner purchased 110 acres of land in Petersburg, NY with the intent of creating a weekend retreat to reconnect with the land and entertain family and friends. The site is located on a hilltop in upstate New York with panoramic views of the Taconic Mountains. The program consisted of extensive renovations to the existing 1980’s Main House to better suit the owner’s lifestyle, the creation of a barn/workshop space that would act as a gateway to the courtyard, and the addition of a pool and pool house.

Our team developed a strategy to renovate the existing main house, design and build a car barn, pool house and pool. Extensive landscape improvements were conceived by the landscape architect and landscape contractor, and incorporate an orchard, wild flower meadow, new stone retaining walls, the reintroduction of a variety of native trees and a new pond.

The new barn accommodates 3 cars, equipment storage and a workshop. What might have been a nondescript utilitarian building, evolved into a showcase of local materials and custom building craft. The base of the barn is locally quarried fieldstone. The Douglas Fir roofing and siding has weathered naturally, embracing an organic relationship with the surrounding landscape. The cupola lights the portal during the day and serves as a beacon for the farm at night.

The Asian-inspired pool house was designed as a glass box with sliding doors that open to the pool deck, pool and landscape beyond. The materials pallet is natural and encouraged to weather naturally and blend in with the surroundings. The deep overhang protects the glass walls and naturally shades the interior, while the sliding glass walls provide cross ventilation, cooling the space naturally. A lush vegetable and herb garden extends beyond the deck.
